Abstract

Children who do not eat breakfast are more likely to develop obesity. However, the association between the omission of breakfast and subsequent consumption of unhealthy foods in children is scarce in the literature. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aims to (I) describe the prevalence of children who do not eat breakfast; (II) test the association between breakfast consumption and the consumption of unhealthy foods during the day in a pediatric population in South America. This research will carry out with children aged 5-7 years enrolled in public and private schools in 7 cities from Latin America, namely: Fortaleza, São Paulo and Teresina (Brazil), Medellín (Colombia), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Lima (Peru) and Copiapó (Chile). The method used to obtain the necessary information is the food frequency questionnaire (QFF), where the frequency of breakfast consumption and the quantity and frequency of food consumed will be informed. Children who consume breakfast e5 days during the week will classify as consumers of breakfast, and those who consume <5 days will classify as children who skip breakfast. The foods that will be measured are cookies, cakes, sweet rolls, dreams, sugary breakfast cereals, baked and fried snacks, french fries, fried cassava, hamburgers, pizzas, sausages, cold cuts, breaded filet, milk with chocolate, dairy desserts, milkshake, fatty cheeses (with more than 25% fat, example: plate cheese, grated cheese), snacks, boxed fruit juices (including soy), powdered artificial juices, soft drinks, dulce de leche, sweet cuts (guava, marmalade, banana), ice cream (dough, popsicle), chocolate (bar, bonbon, brigadeiro) and sweets (candies, chewing gum, lollipops, gummy candies). For statistical analysis, descriptive analyzes (mean, median, standard deviation, and proportions) will use to answer objective I and the chi-square test to test the association between variables and thus respond to objective II. The confidence interval adopted will be 95%, with the criterion of statistical significance ± = 5%. (AU)
