Abstract

This is a multicenter cohort (24-month) in a sample of children. This project will be developed in São Paulo and five other cities in South America: Buenos Aires (Argentina), Lima (Peru), Medellin (Colombia) and Teresina (Brazil). The sample size was previously calculated with the main objective to evaluate if there is an association between "Double Burden of Malnutrition" (mainly exposure) and "Ideal Cardiovascular Health" (mainly outcome), for which the baseline cohort sample size will consist of at least 690 children per city, totaling 4,140 subjects of both sexes age-range 5 to 7 years old, who will be follow-up in two moments (12 months and 24 months). The sample will be recruited by complex sample selection in public and private schools of each city. At each visit we will be assessed: to obtain information from: social and environmental factors, family environment, food intake, preference and food choices, physical activity and sedentary behaviors body composition, cardiovascular health biomarkers, insulin resistance, pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers and iron and ferritin serum levels. To analyze the data, we will use: I) descriptive analyzes (mean, median, proportions, 95% confidence intervals and interquartile range); II) hypothesis testing (comparisons of quantitative and qualitative variables); III) measuring disease and exposure occurrence (measures of prevalence and incidence); IV) measuring associations between exposures and outcome [by univariate and multivariate analyzes prevalence ratio and/or ² coefficient (baseline data) and relative risk and/or ² coefficient (follow-up data)]. The statistical significance adopted will be alpha 5%. It is expected that the project can: I) to identify the strength of associations between "Double Burden of Malnutrition" and "Ideal Cardiovascular Health"; II) what is the most accurate "Double Burden of Malnutrition" diagnostic method; III) to identify longitudinal changes in pattern of "Ideal Cardiovascular Health" during childhood; as well as, to identify the mediator/modifier effects of environmental, socioeconomic and behavioral variables on the longitudinal pattern this outcome.
