Abstract

With the growth of sugar consumption in the world, it has also been observed in the last decades, the increase in the intake of sugary drinks, since its intake among children older than five years exceeds WHO recommendations. However, measurement methods can influence these estimates. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aims to test the predictive value of a food frequency questionnaire on sugary drinks compared to insulin resistance and glycemia in children from six cities in South America The study participants are preschoolers and students aged 5 to 7 years, enrolled in public and private schools in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Lima (Peru), Medellin (Colombia), São Paulo and Teresina (Brazil), being the sample distributed proportionally based on the presence of a specialized research center with experience and that participated in the pilot phase of the study. The sample will be selected by random sampling by type of school and classrooms. At each visit, data collection procedures were performed for social and environmental factors, family environment, food intake, preference and food schools, and blood samples. For the statistical analysis will be used descriptive analysis by means of calculations of mean, standard deviation, percentages and 95% confidence interval, and the analysis of predictive validity of the questionnaire to respond to objective I, through the 2x2 contingency table. The criterion of statistical significance adopted is ± = 5% for all hypothesis tests.
