Abstract

Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease that affects the periodontium and still represents one of the main causes of tooth loss. It has a complex etiopathogenesis, which makes treatment success difficult. For this reason, new therapies are emerging, aiming their use as an adjunct to conventional periodontal treatment, which consists of scaling and non-surgical root planing. Atmospheric pressure cold plasma (PBTAP) technology has shown considerable potential for application in medical and dental areas, however, its use in periodontics is still underexplored. The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of PBTAP in the control of experimental periodontal disease induced by ligature and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, in rats. It was established that, after the induction of periodontitis in the mandibular first molar tooth, periodontal treatment would consist of scaling, followed or not by the application of PBTAP. Therefore, this work will evaluate the following groups: 1) control of periodontitis (untreated), 2) scaling, and 3) scaling + PBTAP. After appropriate processing, samples obtained from animals will be analyzed by histomorphometry and computerized microtomography, to assess collagen degradation and loss of bone tissue. Immunohistochemical evaluation of the Ki-67 marker will also be performed to observe cell proliferation. Finally, the data will be analyzed with the appropriate statistical test, adopting a significance level of 5%. (AU)
