Abstract

The acquired pellicle (AP) is a film that results from selective adsorption of proteins, glycoproteins and lipids on the tooth surface. The AP forms a protective interface on the tooth surface that reduces the demineralizing effects of acids. Recently, a statherin-derived peptide (Stn15pSpS) was shown to protect against initial enamel erosion in vitro and in vivo. However, the exact mechanisms by which the protection occurs are not known so far. Thus, the aim of this study will be to provide additional insights into the mechanisms of dental protection by treatment with Stn15pSpS by evaluating the thickness and morphology of the AP formed on the tooth surface after treatment with this peptide.
