Abstract

Water contamination by organic contaminants such as dyes has been concerning scientific society around the world, being a recurrent topic in scientific literature. Due the textile sector's importance and the huge amount of wastewater generated, dyes become dangerous not only by being on wastewater, but also for their persistence and interactions that can lead to environmental and human health damage. Conventional water treatment methods and technologies have been shown to be ineffective ways to remove most of these contaminants. Therefore, it becomes essential to look for alternative methods to treat wastewater. The adsorption process stands out for its low cost, high efficiency and ease operation. Among the adsorbent materials, biosorbents have been standing out for being an eco-friendly, made from renewable sources and low-cost material. Thereby, it is intended to produce functionalized cellulose microfibers with cationic property (cDAC), from agro-industrial waste generated by sugarcane industry and study its use on congo red dye removal from wastewater. The microfibers will be characterized by their chemical, structural and morphological properties. Adsorption and desorption tests of congo red dye according to its initial concentration, solution's pH and contact time will be performed. This proposal is part of the FAPESP INCT Thematic Project (2014/50869-6) (INEO) between Jul/2017-Jun/2023 and provides a 03-months of sandwich period (BEPE) at Universidad Austral do Chile, in Valdivia.
