Impactation of food and foreign bodies on aerodigestive tracts of patients with dental prostheses: a observational study

Abstract

The use of dental prostheses has become more and more common due to the aging of the population. Reports of professionals who work with endoscopic urgencies and emergencies indicate that the use of the prostheses would be related to the increased risk of accidental food impaction in the aerodigestive tract, however, no study has been done that relate the use of prostheses to the incidence of food and foreign body impaction in this population. Thus, the purpose of the study is to compare the incidence of accidental importation of foods and foreign bodies in patients who used dental prostheses or not at the moment of the accident. The study will be observational, with a retrospective survey of cases of accidental aerodigestive impactation will be surveyed through data in electronic medical records, from 2012 to 2021. The incidence of accidental aerodigestive impactation will be compared between patients who used dental prostheses and patients who did not wear any braces. The statistical analysis will be done by unpaired t-test or by Mann-Whitney test. Will be used the Sigma Stat program version 5.0 and the differences between groups will be considered significant when reached the value p<0.05.(AU)
