Abstract

The work intends to investigate how the notions of urbanity and inhabit - in its practical and theoretical dimensions - are activated in some of the recent experiences of urbanization of slums and precarious settlements in Brazil, and of the re-urbanization of large deteriorated modern settlements in France - grands ensembles. Three urban and housing projects are selected for analysis within the Programa de Urbanização de Favelas [Favela Urbanization Program (2009)], in São Paulo, and three within the Programme National de Renouvellement Urbain [National Urban Renewal Program] (PNRU-2005) for the ZUPs - Zone à Urbaniser en Priorité [Areas to be Urbanized as a Priority], in Vaulx-en-Velin, city of Greater Lyon. The main objective is to outline - based on these intervention strategies and dialogue with the responsible architects - the subsequent approximations and divergences of a common theoretical debate: a contemporary response to the return to the city.
