Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate the notions of urban and habiting in their practical and theoretical dimensions that are activated in recent experiences of urbanizing favelas and precarious settlements in Brazil, and urban renewal of large deteriorated modern complexes in France. Despite their different realities, they all carry an aspect of anti-urbanity and socio-spatial segregation in the background, along a line that goes from radical ideological abstraction to economic precariousness. Urban and housing projects that propose interventions in the socio-spatial dynamics of these territories were selected for analysis in this research. The projects are part of the PAC-UAP (1990-2010) in São Paulo and the PNRU (1990-2010) for the ZUPs on the outskirts of Lyon, Paris and Bordeaux. The theoretical and methodological elaborations of Vigliecca & Associados for the transformation of the Brazilian urban reality, and of Lacaton & Vassal as a response to the French \"urban crisis\", are highlights in the tensioning of the suggested approximation. They seem to present a disciplinary inflection in relation to the current architectural culture in each reality, regarding how to respond to their apparently opposing urban issues. The main objective is to outline, based on these interventions, approximations and divergences of a possible common theoretical debate: the \"Return to the City\" of the 1960s and 1970s, opening up to its plausible updating. Finally, the aim is to highlight criticism in social practice in Architecture and Urbanism. (AU)
