Abstract

Objective: To analyze the effect of the amount of time at high-intensity attributed to sports participation on changes in components of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in lean adolescents, as well as to identify the potential mediation role of insulin resistance in the relationship between high-intensity sports participation and metabolic syndrome. Methods: The sample will be composed of 121 adolescents of both sexes who were followed by 12 months. The dependent variables will be high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c [mg/dL]), triglycerides (TG [mg/dL]), fasting glucose (mg/dL), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP [mmHg]). Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) also will be assessed, while intensity of sports participation will be assessed by maximum heart rate (HR max). High-intensity sports participation will be identified as the time spent in HR max e90%. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and linear regression will be used to assess the findings. Expected findings: It is expected to identify how high-intensity sports participation can prevent cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes among lean adolescents. (AU)
