Abstract

This research is looking to integrate two fundamental aspects of archaeological ceramics analysis, to discuss technology and its cultural and historical meanings. The intention of this project is to produce a technological and stylistic characterization of the Pocó-Açutuba ceramics of the Upper Madeira River and a regional macro comparison between this ancient polychromic pottery in the Amazon and samples of the Saladoid series collection stored at the Peabody Museum, excavated by Dr. Rouse on the Orinoco Basin and dated from 4,000 to 2,000 years BP. The two main research fronts are the ceramic petrography and technological and formal analysis of ceramics collection's of Saladoid series stored at the Peabody Museum. Through these activities, it will be possible to contribute with questions related to models of Amazonian archeology and propose interpretations regarding the process of anthropization of the Amazon forest by indigenous populations over time.
