Abstract

Thymomas are tumors of the epithelial cells of the thymus and are the most common type of tumor of the anterior mediastinum. It is a rare tumor (0.13 per 100,000 inhabitants)(10) that is frequently associated with autoimmune disorders, such as myasthenia gravis. Several classifications have been described, with different accuracy in terms of impact on clinical practice. Currently, the classification is based on WHO criteria(7) developed in 2004 and revised by a consensus of the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group (ITMIG)(1) in 2014, with types A, AB, B1, B2, and B3. The clinical stages are defined based on a collaboration between the ITMIG and the IASLC (International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer), classifying tumors into stages I, II, IIIa, IIIb, IVa, and IVb. Thus, this project seeks to characterize and classify past and future cases of thymomas at the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP) of HCFMUSP, also evaluating the respective outcomes of overall survival, disease-free survival, and progression-free survival, as well as epidemiological characteristics and the description of treatments. In the end, it is hoped that the incorporation of clinical data into the pathology findings will allow a refinement of the current classifications, with better accuracy.(AU)
