Abstract

The purpose of this project is to develop a series of cartobibliographic studies of a set of maps, which belongs to the Taunay cartographic collection, of the Museu Paulista, mapping the territory of São Paulo between the 16th to the 20th century. These studies will be carried out from the perspective of the new History of Cartography, proposed by John Brian Harley in the 1980s, and continued by Matthew H. Edney from the 2000s. This project is part of a larger effort of the Museu Paulista which aims to qualify all the maps of the Taunay Collection, which has 246 manuscripts and printed charts, original and fac-similar copies, containing representations of different parts of the Portuguese America, later Brazil, as well as of the American continent and the world between the 16th and 20th century.Based on this cartobibliographic studies we intend to achieve four main objectives: a) to reconstitute Affonso Taunay's performance in the formation of this collection during his period as director of the Museu Paulista (1917-1945); b) to develop individual studies of the São Paulo charts of the Taunay Collection; to write and organize entries that will be part of the "Dictionary of the History of Cartography of São Paulo", an instrument dedicated to stimulate and support new researches in this area in Brazil; feed the Wikipédia: GLAM/Museu Paulista database from these entries.
