Abstract

Depression is among the most common mental disorders. Studies have detached high numbers of prevalence amid populations in different countries. Depression has contributed significantly to the Years of Life lived with Disability, the Years of Life Lost and the Disability Adjusted Life Years, resulting in health, economic and social high costs. The negative life events have an influence on the physical and psychological well-being of the individuals, requiring cognitive, emotional, social and biophysiological adaptation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between negative life events and the incidence of depression or depressive symptoms using the study's baseline sample (ELSA-Brasil). Method: The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) is a prospective, multicenter cohort study that includes 15.105 participants. The main objective is the study of cardiovascular disease and diabetes and the associated classic and non-classic factors, such as lifestyle habits including diet, smoking and alcohol consumption, psychosocial factors such as exposure to negative life events and the presence of psychiatric disorders. Cross-sectional and prospective analysis will be performed using ELSA-Brasil baseline data (Odds Ratio - OR and respective 95% Confidence Interval - 95% CI), and the 9-year follow-up using Poisson (Relative Risk - RR and 95% CI). The OR and RR will be presented without adjustment, adjusted for sociodemographic factors and multivariate models adjusted for confounding factors (other psychiatric disorder, comorbidities, religious practice, and others. The analysis will be made using SPSS software version 25.
