Abstract

The present master's research project has as its object the debates about the order of plantation work that were fought in the British Ceylon press between 1840 and 1855, that is, in the period of assembly of the coffee complex on the island. Through a study of the colonial press, the main objective of the investigation will be to understand the relationship between wage labor and slave labor when Britain sought to impose its anti-slavery and free trade values on the capitalist world economy.
