Formal and non-formal education of the Brazilian adult population: schooling and the use of Information and Communication Technologies for learning

Abstract

Which markers of lifelong education can be observed in the adult population living in Brazil? Based on four theoretical axes: life course, lifelong education, demographic opportunities window and use of information and communication technologies in the knowledge society, this project aims to compose a portrait of adult education, considering aspects and characteristics of formal and non-formal education. It is a project that aims to investigate whether the historically consolidated and identified inequalities in formal education are also observed regarding the use of information and communication technologies for educational/training purposes as an operational feature of non-formal education. We will use three secondary data sources: the Brazilian National Household Sample Survey and the Brazilian Continuous National Household Sample Survey, both from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and the Research on the use of Information Technologies and Communication in Brazilian households, of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee. As this is an interdisciplinary research proposal, situated between Education and Demography realms, we hope that the results can support future studies in both areas, and make it possible to offer a profile of adult education, expanded through the lens of non-formal education, as a subsidy for more accurate public education policies for adults.
