Abstract

recent decades, population growth and the growing expansion in the use ofdrugs, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants and personal care and cleaningproducts have brought harm to aquatic life and impacted human health. Thepresence of these emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater and surface water, mainly as a result of human activity, negatively impacts the ecosystems involved,in addition to inducing endocrine disturbances in humans. Thus, the developmentof solvents and new green and sustainable methodologies for the removal of thesecontaminants are extremely important and are the focus of Green AnalyticalChemistry (GAC). This research project proposes the development of hydrophobicdeep eutectic solvents (hDES) for ECs removal. The hDES will be synthesized bycombining mixtures based on DL-menthol, lactic acid and acetic acid, employing amixture planning to optimize the best proportions of the precursors. These newsolvents will be used to extract bisphenol A, bisphenol S, polybrominated diphenylethers from wastewater samples and determine them by gas chromatographycoupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A second stage of the project will aim atmodifying hDES with magnetic nanoparticles, previously prepared by coprecipitation, aiming at the removal of inorganic contaminants such as As, Cd, Cu,Hg, Pb and Zn in sewage sludge samples from a plastic industry. Thedetermination of these contaminants will be carried out by inductively coupledplasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), where it is expected to obtain solvents withhigh removal capacity for use in environmental matrices. This project will aim atthe development and production of a new class of sustainable green solvents andthe evaluation of its application in environmental matrices. It is expected to obtainsolvents with high capacity to remove different chemical contaminants, in additionto the development of new sustainable materials and applicable in chemicalanalysis.
