Abstract

The pervasiveness of emergent self-organizing phenomena in biological systems constitutes a fundamental open problem regarding not only biology, but also other fields under the umbrella of complexity science such as cybernetics, artificial intelligence, sociology, and cognitive science. In addition to occurring within the context of systemics by partial structures and the theory of quasi-truth, our postdoctoral research project claims that such a problem enables one to mathematically answer the question of how formal knowledge is created by interacting systems in an environment (or universe). To this end, we focus on the theoretical investigation of the sufficient conditions for an interacting system (defined as a family of partial structures) to display emergent organization, self-organization, and enaction, where its interaction with the environment or other neighbor systems is measured by algorithmic information. Bringing an innovative interdisciplinary approach that is grounded on algorithmic information theory, pragmatic theory of quasi-truth, model theory, and cybernetics, our research proposal aims to construct definitions and abstract models upon which one can prove theorems that set the foundations and limitations of the concepts and phenomena. Based on this study in the context of mathematical logic and complex systems science, our long-term objectives include contributions to the pragmatism, representationalism, relativism, and constructivism debates.
