From casqueiro to sambaqui: the social imaginarium through the practices of sambaqui's degradation

Abstract

This project aims to analyze the cultural practices of degradation of sambaquis and their social imaginary, taking as a case study the scenario of Santa Catarina during the 19th and 20th centuries. Due to the absence of studies that deepen the motivations behind the sambaquis' conchiferous extraction practices, it was decided to identify and analyze these cultural practices (CHARTIER, 1988) through the sessions of the Santa Catarina newspapers from 1850 to 1960, a period related to state recognition of the sambaquis as a historical space of national scientific importance. For the analysis of the sources listed, the Content Analysis method was chosen (FONSECA JÚNIOR, 2006), which aims to systematize both objective elements, referring to the location and period of conchiferous extraction carried out in these sambaquis, and the subjective ones, referring to how these practices were carried out, who exercised them and what intentions were behind them. This research aims, therefore, to recognize these cultural practices of conchiferous extraction, and to analyze them from cultural and post-colonial and cultural studies, to understand how the social imaginary (CARVALHO, 1987) was linked to the degradation practices of the sambaquis over the last centuries.
