Abstract

The present text brings the initial conditions of doctoral research on the work of Brazilian playwright Consuelo de Castro (1946-2016), a debut author in the 1960s, prestigious and critically awarded. The first collection of her works published in 1989 and entitled Urgência e ruptura constitutes the corpus of this research. The eight plays in the volume are divided into periods: from 1968 to 1978, corresponding to the moment of Brazilian historical urgency, and, in sequence, those written in the years 1978 to 1988 manifest rupture in form, time, and space. Looking at these categories makes it possible to glimpse the changes in the spaces of the dramaturgies because, in the first set of plays, the demarcations refer to the house, the office, and the university, internal spaces, but in the second moment, the space loses realistic precepts to use the abstract. Therefore, investigating spatiality criteria in Consuelo de Castro's dramaturgy and reviewing the critical distinction between the terms 'urgency' and 'rupture,' how such factors recur in the dramatic spaces of the works, are the objectives of this study. Exploring the internal redoubt will be done from a phenomenological perspective, thinking of the house as an object that retains the contradiction of external hostilities and the privilege of shelter inside (Bachelard, 1978). This study is also supported by critical and historiographical precepts of drama, raised by debates of Décio de Almeida Prado (1988), Sábato Magaldi (2004), and Elza Cunha de Vincenzo (1992); besides the clash of internal conflicts in modern drama, read from Peter Szondi (2001) and Jean-Pierre Sarrazac (2013).
