Abstract

The study of nonlinear optical phenomena in micro and nano-scale engineered cavities and waveguides present opportunities to further improve our fundamental understanding of such processes as well as to design new practical devices [29]. This is due to two basic advantages: first, the ability to confine optical waves in the sub-micron scale greatly reduces the optical power required to induce nonlinear optical phenomena. Second is the ability to engineer different materials and geometrical structures to optimize a specific nonlinear process. One of our goals in this project is to bridge the field cavity optomechanics and Kerr combs. By exploring the well known effect of standard (fiber-laser) soliton mode-locking with recent insights on soliton bounding through the interaction with acoustic waves. The challenge is to link two very distinct frequency-scales: the optical free-spectral-range, at tens or hundreds of GHz with the mechanical frequency in the MHz-GHz range. (AU)
