Abstract

This project explores the expansion of second slavery and the development of new models of imperial governance throughout the Spanish Monarchy through the generative and analytical lens of loyalist exiles. Delving into and analyzing the personal and political trajectories of key émigrés amongst this class, the project explores the impact of the Spanish American Revolutions on the reconfiguration of the Spanish Empire in the 19th century. Exiles fled from revolutionary violence and political retaliation, relocating to diverse locales in the Americas, such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, the United States, and Brazil. Specifically, this project addresses how these exiles, an often overlooked force within these historical processes, crafted new imperial repertoires in order to understand and potentially preserve colonial rule within the Spanish Empire. Additionally, this project explores how these new repertoires emerged from exiles' experiences during the Spanish American Revolutions and their assessments of other empires, such as Brazil and Great Britain. Likewise, it also focuses on how these imperial repertoires were related to the development of slavery as a revitalized cornerstone of the Spanish Empire. Thus, through exploring these issues, this project will enhance our comprehension of the entanglements between the Spanish American Revolutions, the rise of second slavery, and the promotion of imperial rule in the 19th century.
