Abstract

An integrated approach between invertebrate demographic patterns using genomics and geomorphological features is important to understand the connectivity of populations in the deep sea, which is still poorly studied, especially in virtually unknown areas such as the Brazilian continental margin. The present project proposes a 6-month internship at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, under the supervision of the Dr. Sergi Taboada. Dr. Taboada is highly experienced in population genomics, connectivity and phylogeographic studies of marine species, especially with deep-sea polychaetes, the main study object of the present proposal. The facility in Madrid was chosen by its historical prestige, since is one of the oldest universities in the world, as well as by the available infrastructure that will allow the conduction of all analyses and studies, but ultimately due to the experience of Dr. Taboada's Team. At the internship I propose to improve the knowledge and learn new techniques of molecular analyses to be used in different polychaete species to study the connectivity and population genomics by both Sanger sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing methods. Additionally, Dr. Taboada will supervise and aid me with other high-end molecular techniques, such as transcriptome, including extraction, process and interpretation of results that will improve my scientific carrier and allow me to use these techniques in future studies.
