Abstract

Dental zirconias are known for their excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, but it is a great challenge for them to have satisfactory aesthetic characteristics. After so many advances, we currently find in the market multi-layered dental zirconias with different yttria concentrations, polychromatic shapes and multiple clinical indications. However, there are few studies in the literature that describe the behavior of the interface between these layers, especially regarding the fracture toughness in the contact region between the different zirconia classes. The present study is based on the possibility that the interface is the weakest point of multilayered zirconia, and will investigate the energy required to separate them, in other words, the fracture toughness of the interface. Brazil-nut specimens were chosen for the experiments because they allow the analysis of the energy required for interfacial fracture at different angulations, verifying mixed failure modes, either tensile or shear in compression tests. The groups will be divided according to the aging in hydrothermal reactor and the inclination angle of the specimens in the compression test, the failure modes of the fractured specimens will have their microstructure characterized in SEM/FEG and the crystalline phases will be analyzed in XRD. Exploratory analysis of the results will be done to determine the most appropriate test for statistical analysis.
