Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the application of low temperature atmospheric pressure plasma (LTAPP) in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced mucositis. Commercially available plasma generating equipment (Kinpen") will be used for this, which is available at Indiana School of Dentistry. Organotypic models of oral mucositis will be treated with LTAPP for the determination of an effective protocol. The possible mechanisms of action will be studied by assessing the effects of LTAPP on cytotoxicity, the epithelial junctions and microscopic analysis. The effect of C. albicans infection on mucositis induced in organotypic model and on LTAPP treatment will be also studied. All assays will be performed in triplicate in two independent events. Results will be analyzed for distribution and the most suitable statistical tests will then be selected. The significance level will be 5%. (AU)
