Abstract

Rheumatic autoimmune inflammatory diseases (RAIDs) is a group of inflammatory autoimmune diseases that affects primarily the connective tissues (Thomsen et al. 2020) and include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjögren's syndrome, psoriasis and systemic scleroderma (Goldblatt and O'Neill 2013). These are a varied group of diseases in which the immune system response leads to tissue damage mediated by the presence of autoantibodies (Marrack et al. 2001), culminating in tissue destruction and disability. Its difficult to estimate the prevalence of rheumatic diseases, since they are an heterogeneous groups of diseases, but autoimmune diseases are estimated to affect 5% of the population with substantial morbidity (Deane and El-Gabalawy 2014) and decrease in functionality (Falsarella et al. 2012), including loss of work ability and other social consequences (KBak et al. 2016). Rheumatic autoimmune inflammatory diseases also have high comorbidities, especially with cardiovascular diseases as seen in systemic sclerosis (Panopoulos et al. 2018), RA (Jeong et al. 2017) , psoriasis (Rendon and Schäkel 2019) and Sjögren syndrome (Kang and Lin 2010). The etiopathology of RAIDs is not completely understood, but it is believed that genetic factors as well as environmental factors are important to the development of autoimmune diseases (Wu et al. 2020).
