Abstract

This research project, intended to be carried out at the Sorbonne Université, aims to study the prefaces that accompanied the first French and English translations of the work of Russian author Mikhail Bakhtin, during the seventies and eighties. By doing this study, we want to understand how the categories of author and hero, indispensable for the architecture of his theory of the novel, were treated in the texts of the corpus, and what these first interpretations can say about the understanding of the author's ideas. This research is important for Bakhtian studies because, compared to studies of the author's translations, the prefacial paratext was relegated to the background, even though it was one of the main entry points to the Bakhtian text for Western readers.
