Abstract

Using patent data that are derived from the Brazilian Patents Office (INPI - National Institute of Industrial Property), the objective of this project is twofold. The first objective is to identify regions and technologies in regions of Brazil that establish global innovation networks. The second aim is to understand the relation between technological complexity and engagement with global innovation networks. In this regard, the question that we propose to analyse is whether regions in Brazil that are more technologically complex are those that have stronger global innovation networks. The main motivation for this research is centred on the idea that knowledge is a complex phenomenon of a multifaceted nature that requires different actors. More complex technologies depend on broader and more complex collaboration networks. Therefore, we expect that technological complexity is higher for regions in Brazil that have stronger and more global innovation networks because the collaborations provide access to additional capabilities. To do that, we identify all patents in the period from 1997 to 2019 that were co-patented by one Brazilian inventor and another abroad. We also distinguish which technologies are generated in Brazilian regions that engage in global innovation networks. In addition, we evaluate the technological complexity of Brazilian regions to relate the global innovation networks. (AU)
