Abstract

Simplified visualization of multivariate data by trail edge bundling remains an open and complex problem with no real method that targets generic datasets. In this FAPESP Research Abroad project, we will develop an effective and robust method to generically bundle paths with multiple attributes. To aid development time and increase the overall impact, our work will be based on CUBu, the fastest and most feature-rich bundling framework in existence. We will work together with Prof. Alexandru Telea, the creator of CUBu and one of the most influential bundling authors in the literature, who also leads Utrecht University's Visualization and Graphics (VIG) group. We will start by first investigating how to adapt techniques in other research fields to help us tackle the bundling of multivariate paths. We will assess our new method with a series of case studies including a multi-level analysis using Brazilian mobility data and evaluation with technical professionals and nonspecialists users. We intend to publish our completed research in a high-impact international journal. To better fit Utrecht University's calendar, we plan this visit for month 11 of the FAPESP Master's research project. (AU)
