Abstract

Introduction. Anthropometry is a rapid, inexpensive and available body composition assessment method, which uses measurements such as weight, height, skinfolds, limb length and width to estimate body size, proportions and/or body compartments. Among these compartments is muscle tissue, a metabolically active tissue and important for clinical decision-making for the monitoring of an individual's health status. However, anthropometry equations capable of estimating muscle tissue are scarce in the scientific literature and have limitations according to the specificities of the samples in which they were developed. Objective. To develop a predictive equation capable of estimating muscle mass in a sample of young Brazilian adults. Methodology. This is a cross-sectional study that will use anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) data collected in the years 2021 and 2022 from volunteers who participated in the Iris Project (FAPESP Process 2020/05792-6). Statistical analysis. The equation will be developed through factor analysis and its diagnostic performance will be determined by calculating sensitivity, specificity and predictive value with a 95% confidence interval. The means will be compared by Student's t test with a significance level set at P<0.05.
