Abstract

Obesity and overweight have reached epidemic statistics, in the brazilian scenario, in 2019, obesity was present in a quarter of the population aged over 18 years (IBGE, 2020). In this context, bariatric surgery emerges as one of the treatment possibilities, nevertheless, the performance of bariatric surgery results in profound changes in the patients eating habits, often resulting in a postoperative psychological illness. As a consequence of this, the process of psychological assessment becomes a requirement to perform bariatric surgery. In this perspective, the psychoanalytic approach contributes to the psychodynamic understanding in the diagnosis, providing an important theoretical-methodological framework for understanding the subjective issues that appear in obesity cases, the orality, meaning and object relations. However, despite the growing demand, the published studies with psychoanalytic orientation of psychological assessment are scarce. Considering these aspects, the present study aims to identify and characterize the methodology used to perform psychological assessment with psychoanalytic orientation in patients who are candidates for bariatric surgery. For this purpose, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews will be applied with professionals who apply this procedure in clinics or hospitals, public or private, in the state of São Paulo. The data collected by the questionnaire will be explored by descriptive and comparative analyses, and the interviews in units of meaning, seeking to identify signifiers that can contribute to the investigation. It is expected that this study will contribute to future studies that systematize and investigate the psychological assessment with bariatric patients in the psychoanalytic orientation.
