Abstract

This BEPE research proposal integrates the ongoing doctoral research project «The Collection of the Jesuit Collegium Romanum: Circulation of objects between missionary activities and collecting practices in the Early Modern Age», which studies the «musaeum» at the Roman College under the care of Fr. Athanasius Kircher, S.J., in the period from 1651 to 1680. By identifying and following objects as they move into and out of that museum, the project aims to investigate the global circulation of elements of material culture which participated in both European early modern collecting practices and the missionary enterprises of the Society of Jesus. Our overarching goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the specific participation of the Jesuits in these collecting activities. Following up evidence that emerged in our previous BEPE internship, this time we propose to survey, locate, and study documents relating to agents involved in the introduction and transmission of non-European objects within European collecting circles, with particular attention to the Jesuit Procuratores a Roma. The fonds held at ARSI - Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu will be one of the primary objects of our archival investigation, complemented by research in other institutions according to pertinency and availability. Parallel to that, our cooperation with the Historical Archives of the Pontifical Gregorian University in the GATE Project will be continued and expanded, encompassing the research and treatment of documents related to the subsequent curatorships of the «musaeum». In addition, this period abroad will be an opportunity to further dialogue and establish collaborations with more experienced scholars in the field, particularly the supervisor Prof. Federica Favino and colleagues at our host institution, as well as Dr. Sabina Brevaglieri at the Humboldt University of Berlin, and Dr. David Salomoni at CIUHCT - University of Lisbon.
