Abstract

This work is within the scope of the São Paulo Excellence Chair (SPEC) project for the research and development of computational models of fuel cells. One of the research lines of this project is related to the development and optimization of fuel cells, which present chemical reactions between gas flows, thus qualifying them as compressible flows. Given the complexity of fuel cells and the physics involved, it is necessary to use a flexible and robust optimization method. Thus, as an initial effort for the development of optimized cells, this research aims to study and develop an optimization method for designing systems operating with compressible flows with chemical reactions that provide the systematic design of equipment via topological optimization. Thus, it is necessary to consider complex models that represent the physics of the gas flow. For this, the model will consist of the Navier-Stokes equations in combination with electrochemical reaction equations. The optimization will present an objective function aiming at maximizing the electric power generated based initially on the increase of the current density. In addition, this plan considers a research internship period (BEPE) in collaboration with prof. Nigel Brandon of Imperial College London. (AU)
