Abstract

After having finished a translation from Greek into Portuguese of chapters 1 to 9 of Dionysius of Halicarnassus's Peri Synteseos Onomaton (On literary composition) in my first undergraduate research project (FAPESP, no. 2021/03081-8), I propose to provide the translation of the remaining chapters of the treatise, which holds undeniable significance within the rhetorical tradition. In privileging elocution over the discovery of arguments, Dionysius joins Demetrius and Longinus in the canon of a branch of rhetoric that some scholars refer to as "ancient literary criticism." In addition to concluding the translation of Peri Synteseos Onomaton, which remains understudied and unpublished in Lusophone countries, this study will offer an analysis of the concept of euphony in the rhetorician's treatise, which presents, according to Stanford, the most elaborate discussion of the subject in Classical Greece.
