Mechanical effect of osteoporosis in mandibles of Wistar rats submitted to diet change and tooth extraction

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a systemic disease that causes a reduction in bone mineral density and consequent fragility. This mineral loss can be identified in the mandible. Masticatory hypofunction caused by tooth loss and consumption of a soft diet may contribute to a decrease in bone tissue mass and density. AIM: To evaluate the influence of osteoporosis on the bone structure of the mandible of female Wistar rats submitted to diet modification and dental extraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 40 female Wistar rats will be randomly divided into rats with ovariectomy surgery (OVX) and female rats with surgical simulation (SHAM). Among these groups, half of the rats underwent tooth extraction in the upper right incisor and a soft diet was also introduced for half of the animals. Euthanasia was performed 30 days after tooth extraction. After euthanasia, the mandible of one animal from each group will be dissected and submitted to microtomography for further analysis in silico. Then, the mandible of each rat will be used for in vitro analysis by the three-point flexion method by mechanical test to obtain the mechanical properties and the force capable of fracturing it. Using the data obtained in the mechanical test, analyzes will be made using the finite element method to understand the biomechanics of the mandible bone at the time of fracture. EXPECTED RESULTS: It is expected to biomechanically understand the effect of osteoporosis, diet change and tooth extraction on the bone strength of the mandible.
