Abstract Brazil has been consolidating itself as one of the largest global producers of pork, and with the potential to further expand its relative share in this market. For that, the production chain has been organized to meet the demands of the consumer market, which increasingly seeks a chain that is attentive to good production practices and animal welfare. A sick animal can remain in unnecessary suffering on a pig farming in addition to becoming a risk to other pigs as a possible source of infection, resulting in increased costs and labor, in addition to lower performance. So, the theme "Ensuring proper euthanasia within the Brazilian swine production systems" was selected by the research groups as an object of research due its economic and social importance. It is extremely important to address this issue in a practical and effective way, respecting the routine of the production systems. It is extremely important to provide to people in the swine system adequate training form proper identification of pigs in need of care and treatment, and timely euthanasia, so that they are able not only perform euthanasia procedure properly, but also feel comfortable doing it, because they know that they are performing in the best possible way and ethically, respecting animal life. We believe that our proposal has the power to achieve this goal and transform the way people see and perform euthanasia. This work will not only improve animal welfare by improving training and decision-making of caretakers on-farm, but it will enable the exchange of information and collaboration between three groups of researchers from universities in two different countries, ensuring animal welfare can be optimized utilizing the most up to date science-based information on a global scale and will also contribute to the development of six Sustainable Development Goals recommended by the UN. | |
