Abstract

Delamination is typical damage in a laminate composite that must be detected and quantified prematurely. The key idea of this dissertation is to apply a co-Kriging procedure to quantify this damage. Kriging is already utilized to execute this kind of prognosis; however, using co-Kriging allows us to combine a small quantity of expensive data (from experimental tests or calibrated models) with cheap data from a simple model without a previous calibration. The proposed method involves correlating multiple data sets of Lamb waves given by numerical and experimental simulations in laminates. Our numerical data is expected to be cheap and acquired from a simplified model based on the Kirchhoff-Love theory of plates, including a simple damage model of delamination to understand how this effect changes some signal output and features/damage index. We will combine these cheap numerical data with additional experimental tests in a laminate with piezoceramics, actuating, and receiving Lamb waves. These two data sets plan to interpolate a surrogate model better to make more accurate predictions about the size and effect of the simulated delamination area.
