Abstract

The world of work shortcomings produce diverse economic practices as local strategies for providing work and income, reinforcing the existence of a lower circuit of the urban economy. This project's aim is to analyze and interpret the various existing rationalities in the popular economy drawing upon the local perspective of the Maranhão's capital, São Luís. This research proposal is linked to the project "Direito ao Mar: Economia Costeira da Região Metropolitana da Grande São Luís" (FAPESP Process nº 2021/00183-4), as well as to the "Entre Mares" project (CAPES Process nº 88887.469514/ 2019-00), being an extension of the studies carried out so far. The development of our proposal is based on the following methodological procedures: i) literature review on the subject; ii) systematic observation of the spaces covered by the popular economy; iii) semi-structured interviews with the subjects of interest in the research; and iv) application of questionnaires with agents of the popular economy. From this, we intend to build an interpretation of work and income initiatives, which present various forms, features and geographic content today.
