Marginal/peripheral culture and young black women: counter-trends to the process of socio-spatial fragmentation in medium-sized cities and Brazilian metropolises?

Abstract

Young black women have their trajectories (of life and space) conditioned by the intersection of elements such as race, gender, social class, sexuality and stage of life, which marginalizes them and imposes their spatialities. The marginal / peripheral culture is evident as a way of expanding the spatiality of young black women, enabling their (re) existence, construction of other identities, affirmation and expression. This process occurs in different ways in Brazilian metropolises and medium-sized cities, given their distinct urban formations. In this sense, the present doctoral project aims to understand how the spatialities instituted by young black women in medium-sized cities (Londrina, Maringá and Presidente Prudente) and Brazilian metropolis (São Paulo), based on their participation in marginal / peripheral culture, they emphasize the center-periphery socio-spatial logic, fragmentary or even insurgent logic, of the periphery-periphery type. The collectives of the marginal / peripheral culture investigated will be slams and mine battles, that is, groups made up of and for women. The research will follow the proposal of multilocalized ethnography and has as methodological procedures: virtual ethnography, fieldwork, participant observation (if there are adequate sanitary conditions), semi-structured interview and focus group (which may occur in an online format). It is expected to contribute to the attribution of greater visibility to the agenda of young peripheral black women; for a comparative understanding of how youth cultural manifestations take place in different urban formations; for understanding the importance of youth culture in reactivating sociability in public spaces; and for the consolidation of studies that interpret spatialities of silenced subjects, in Brazilian Geography.
