Giomer technology performance in control and prevention of dentine erosion: microhardness surface and wettability analysis

Abstract

Dental erosion is one of the main cause of tooth wear, which occurs slowly and gradually. Dentin exposure leads to dentin sensitivity; then it is necessary to investigate prevention, control and treatment strategies. The use of consolidated materials and innovative materials based in technologies that are capable to control dentin sensitivity and preventing dental erosion progression is an interesting strategy. The aim of this study will be to evaluate the performance of different agents with distinct technologies and their ability to avoid or minimize the progression of tooth erosive wear by surface microhardness (SM) and wettability (W) tests. 180 sound molars (n=10) will be randomized and divided according to the condition of the dentin into 3 groups: sound (H), eroded dentin by orange juice (EE - simulating extrinsic erosion - immersion 3x/day/5days) and eroded dentin by hydrochloric acid (EI-simulating erosion of intrinsic etiology - 0.6% hydrochloric acid 6x-day/20s). After that, the specimens will be subdivided according to treatment material into: Duraphat (D), Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel (G) and Protect Barrier Coat (B). For the surface SM analysis, the measurement will be performed before and after the erosive challenges and application of the materials, with a load of 10g for 10s. W will be assessed trough the measurement of contact angle by goniometer. The data obtained will be submitted to a normality test and, if satisfied, the 2 way ANOVA test will be performed (p< 0.05).
