Abstract

The electrolyte plays an important role on Li-O2 battery performance and there are many properties they must show. Among them, O2 solubility and electrochemical stability are extremely important to obtain a high capacity and also long cycle life. After that, perhaps the most important characteristic the solvent must have is the low volatility, since the positive electrode is open for O2 accessibility, and the exchange of gases during charge and discharge can lead to lose of electrolyte, if the solvent is volatile. Understanding the role of the electrolyte on O2 electrochemistry will help to build more energy efficient Li-O2 batteries.
