Abstract

The Académie Julian was an important french's private art school in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The significant number of foreign female students enrolled at the institution who sought to have a teaching comparable to the École de Beaux-Arts stands out. Among them, we can mention the South American artists, such as the Brazilians Julieta de França, Nicota Bayeux and Helena Pereira da Silva Ohashi, the Argentinians Hortensia Berdier and María Obligado de Soto y Calvo and the Chileans Rebeca Matte and Célia Castro. This project aims to identify the role of the Académie Julian in the formation of a generation of South American artists, investigating whether their passage through this institution contributed to the insertion of these women in the artistic system and, consequently, in the recognition of their trajectories in their careers. We also intend to carry out an iconographic investigation and a comparative analysis between the works of these painters and sculptors, with the aim of understanding the impact of the school on their productions.
