The food intake of the Brazilian population in food insecurity results from Individual Food Intake Survey 2017-2018.

Abstract

Introduction: Food and nutrition insecurity involves numerous factors, ranging from hunger to the imposition of food consumption patterns that do not respect an individual's cultural individuality. Thus, it is needed to understand the patterns of food consumption in this scenario, so that it is possible to identify the most vulnerable groups and their lack of access to the human rights to adequate food. Objective: To evaluate the food consumption of the Brazilian population in food insecurity. Methods: The dimensions of food insecurity and food consumption will be evaluated based on secondary data available through the Survey of Family Budgets (POF) for 2017/2018. The Brazilian Scale of Food Insecurity (EBIA) was used to directly assess the food and nutrition security at home in 4 categories (food security, mild food insecurity, moderate food insecurity and severe food insecurity), while food consumption was assessed using two 24-hour dietary recalls. Data analysis: The consumed foods will be investigated and classified considering two proposals: 1- Similarity in food identity and nutritional composition and 2- NOVA classification of foods according to the degree of food processing. The frequency and dietary intake in grams of the food groups will be evaluated according to the level of food safety and insecurity. Then, parametric or non-parametric statistical tests will be used to explore the differences between the frequencies and consumption of food groups, and the categories of the EBIA scale.
