Abstract

This research project aims to investigate the trajectory and performance of Manuel Maria Calvet de Magalhães, a teacher who stood out in the Portuguese educational scene, mainly for his role as director of the Francisco de Arruda Preparatory School, in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, between 1956 and 1974. However, it was preceded by a career as a plastic artist, methodologist and collaborator of the Jornal Diário de Lisboa, where he began publishing his articles in 1938 and, from 1959 onwards, began to write regularly, with the status of a specialist. in education. Calvet Magalhães' guidelines and school administration practices increased the contributions to the Diário de Lisboa and gave him an intense movement in the field of the Portuguese pedagogical press, in a period of important changes in Portuguese educational policy. It is hypothesized that this subject can be characterized as an intellectual situated in the school environment, since, in addition to occupying the position of director of the aforementioned institution, he has, throughout his career, made education an epistemic object. Based on the theoretical references of the history of institutions and intellectuals, it is about analyzing a documental corpus composed of texts published in the pedagogical press and current Portuguese and printed documental sources: a compilation of administrative and pedagogical documents about the referred school and the life of Calvet de Magalhães (reports, national programs of the discipline, parliamentary debates, etc.). It is also considered the use of Oral History, through interviews with educators who lived with the referred author. The intention is to understand how Calvet de Magalhães appropriated the available cultural assets, notably the active methodologies, developing and disseminating a new curricular proposal, which placed drawing as an important subject of preparatory teaching and thinking of a teaching method as a unit and continuity in the educational process. Therefore, he moved in the exercise of intellect, generating consequences of his performance as director and prominent columnist in the Portuguese pedagogical press. The research will also contemplate a comparison between the field of Portuguese and Brazilian education in that period, seeking dialogues and correlations between the trajectory of Calvet de Magalhães and that of figures such as Luis Contier and Maria Nilde Mascellani, historical subjects who had significant educational experiences for the space and time in which they were inserted, but which produced knowledge, at the time, with decreasing symbolic value before the rise of educational thought produced in the academic field, which evoked the status of "scientific".
