Abstract

Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the production of treatises in the vernacularintended not only for conversion, but also for teaching the rudiments of Christianity, especially the commandments, moral and theological virtues, risks of Deadly Sins and the Five Senses and Other Lessons. It was during this period that a monk anonymous probably from the Cistercian monastery of Alcobaça elaborated the Horto do Esposo, divided into four parts and full of short stories and sentences about the conduct Christian. Based on this document, this research will examine to what extent their lessons supported the correction of the five senses of the faithful, especially those of sight and hearing. (AU)
