Abstract

In a connected society where the convergence of multiple media requires specificcommunication skills, media literacy is essential in the process of interpreting and producingmessages. In this scenario, an autonomous pedagogy that aims to emancipate citizens and bringthem to social participation, as mentioned by educator Paulo Freire in his works, is crucialespecially among people with visual impairments, since this is one of the audiences that mosthave their neglected rights. Thus, the main objectives of this project are to verify which mediacompetences are essential for the consumption of information by the blind public, especiallywith regard to digital media, and to reflect on how to develop such competences with this public. For this, this empirical reception research project, with a qualitative character and an exploratoryapproach, adopts the following methodology: a) bibliographical research on accessibility inmedia and media skills, b) field research, through individual interviews with caregivers of ahome school for the blind in Bauru (SP), and a focus group with students from the home tounderstand how the media reception process occurs, and c) implementation of a mediacompetence proposal and actions built from the data obtained. The analysis and organization ofdata will occur through content analysis. The results will allow reflection on the formation ofmedia skills for the public in question.
