Effect of gutta-percha coating with biosilicate on the interaction with bioceramic endodontic sealers

Abstract

Guttapercha (GP) associated with filling cement is the solid material of choice in root canal obturation. However, GP does not present adhesive property, and may allow microfiltration at the gutta-percha-filling cement (GP-CO) interface. Bioactive materials such as Biosilicate (BS) may contribute to GP bioactivity and adhesion with bioceramic cements. This study aims to develop protocols for the application of Biosilicate (BS) on gutta-percha. GP will be coated by BS by means of surface treatment (dip-coating). Guttapercha blocks (n=11) will be made and distributed in the experimental groups: GP, GP suspension of 5% and 10% BS particles: GP, GPBS5, GPBS10. Specimens from the different experimental groups will be carbon-coated and visualized in SEM at three magnifications (50x, 500x and 1000x) with or without immersion in PBS for 28 days. New GP blocks (n=78) will be made and distributed in the experimental groups. Disks of ready-to-use bioceramic endodontic cement Bio-C Sealer (Angelus, Brazil), powder-liquid BioRoot (Septodont, France) or resin AH Plus will be made with 10 mm diameter and 5 mm height. The GP blocks will be positioned over the obturator cement disks and stored for 7 days in relative humidity. Afterwards, they will be coupled to the mechanical testing machine for tensile bond strength testing. The results obtained will be submitted to the appropriate statistical tests with a significance level of 5%.
