Abstract Cochlear implant (CI) represents an important progress in auditory rehabilitation in patients with profound irreversible sensorineural hearing loss. Even though both the implantation surgery and general anesthesia are safe, postoperative pain is a common and important side-effect. The present study aims to mitigate this side-effect intraoperatively, through analgesia using ketamine, a NMDA antagonist with anesthetic, analgesic and anti-hyperalgesic effects. In this randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial, we aim to determine the effects of such practice on postoperative pain in the first 24 hours after CI surgery in eligible patients at Craniofacial Anomalies Rehabilitation Hospital at University of São Paulo (HRAC-USP). Additionally, we aim to determine the demand and efficacy of rescue pain medication, the occurrence of postoperative nausea and vomiting and their correlation with implant type, surgical complications, eventual ear malformations, epidemiological factors and the occurrence of cough during anesthesia induction. | |
