Abstract

Migraine is one of the main causes of disability in the world and can have a significant impact on quality of life. Qualitative research provides a basis for an individual view of migraine and the extent to which it affects the environment, as well as the expectations of individuals living with the disease, providing a reflective and broad view that allows us to understand cultural differences and similarities. This qualitative study aims to describe and contrast the experiences and socio-cultural factors associated with migraine through the individual perception of individuals of Brazilian and Spanish origin. Ten participants of both sexes of Spanish origin, aged between 18 and 55, with a diagnosis of migraine according to the 3rd edition of the International Classification of Headaches will be recruited, contrasting the data of 10 Brazilians already collected. Those with another headache diagnosis, a history of trauma to the face and/or neck, cervical disc herniation or cervical osteoarthritis, and any systemic degenerative disease will be excluded. Participants' sociodemographic and clinical data will be collected, and they will be subjected to an in-depth recorded interview to collect their experience of their headache, lasting between 40 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes. The recorded interviews will guarantee anonymity and will be stored and transcribed into verbatim text which will be double-checked. The processed data will be analyzed using thematic analysis. With the analysis, we hope to obtain a reflective and broad view in order to understand cultural differences and similarities. These results can help us to understand how different cultures perceive and live with their pain, and the data can provide suggestions for better management strategies, access to healthcare and coping with the disease.
