Abstract

In quantum field theory, dimension regularization is a standard technique. It consists, essentially, in the regularization of divergent expressions by extending them to d space-time dimensions. The use of this technique requires a consistent treatment of the problem in d dimensions. In this project the student will study the hydrogen atom in d dimensions which is a problem that touches several fundamental aspects of particle and quantum physics. As a final task, the student should address the problem of quark-antiquark bound states in d dimensions. This project will expose the student to several of the techniques they will later use in a future Master's or PHD work in particle physics.
